Great weather means it’s the perfect time to get outdoors for a summer adventure.  When you’re ready to hit the road this summer, be sure your car is too!   While most of us know that our oil needs to be changed every 3,000 miles, we can easily forget to check other crucial fluids like transmission fluid.  A healthy transmission means more funding for your fun and less stress so you can focus on making your summer perfect.  Here are 3 easy steps to keeping your transmission healthy.

1.  Check yours transmission fluid.  If you drive an automatic, check the fluid every 1,000 miles.  Manual transmission should be checked every 3,000 miles.  Much like your oil, the transmission fluid will also have a dipstick with markings indicating acceptable levels.  If you’re unsure where the transmission fluid dipstick is located in your vehicle, consult your owner’s manual.  When checking your transmission fluid, you’re looking for correct levels, color, and smell.  Automatic transmission fluid will be bright red and manual transmission fluid should be translucent.  Both should smell like oil.  If you notice any discoloration, floating particles, or a burnt smell, stop by your  Galva, McPherson, Newton, or Marion Transmission Repair specialist.
2. Know your engine.  Be aware of how your vehicle drives.  You want a transmission that shifts smoothly and quietly.  If you vehicle begins slipping, making strange noises, or seems to shift early or late, you could be experience the symptoms of a transmission malfunction.  Remember, early detection and repair makes the most sense for your vehicle and your wallet.  Proper maintenance leads to minimal operating costs and a long and safe life for your vehicle.  Even the smallest malfunctions left unattended can develop into serious issues.
3. Keep up your maintenance.  Your vehicle is made up of complex and symbiotic relationships, much like the human body.  Many vehicles utilize the engine’s vacuum as their source to control hydraulic pressure and control transmission shift quality.  When it doubt, check your manual.   Any and all scheduled maintenance will be listed.   Never drive for extended periods of time on spares or mismatched tires.  It’s also important to know your vehicle’s weight limits.  Overloading your vehicle can cause excessive strain on your transmission.  The majority of transmission failures result from excessive heat.  Proper tune ups should be performed regularly by your friendly & knowledgeable ASE certified  Galva area Transmission Repair shop.
Knowing your car and its maintenance needs will save you time, money, and stress.  This summer stop by  Nightingale Transmissions before you hit the road.  A little investment into preventative maintenance will pay for itself in no time.  That way once you’ve loaded up your vehicle with sleeping bags, snacks, and friends, you’ll also know it’s loaded with peace of mind.
